Meet Our Team
A restaurant owner for more than 40 years, Phil Benson formed Macro Management Services, Inc., in 1983 to coordinate the overall management of his operations. In the days before anyone had heard of the internet or wireless communication, he built a computerized infrastructure to poll restaurants’ point of sales machines and produce daily sales reports. Recognizing other restaurant owners would be interested in customized sales data, he began offering financial services to client food-service operations.
Phil currently focuses on business planning and analysis for client restaurants with particular attention to restaurant-related compliance and regulatory issues.
He has been a practicing attorney since earning a JD from St. Mary’s Law School in 1968. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Texas at Austin.
He has served as Chairman of the Board of the Children’s Shelter of San Antonio and as board member of the Downtown Alliance, TriParty Transportation Project, the Paseo del Rio Association and Mission Road Developmental Center. He is also a member of the Restaurant Association (nationally, at the state level and locally), the San Antonio Bar Association, and the State Bar of Texas. He served as Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the San Antonio Independent School District and has been a guest lecturer with the Entrepreneurial Program at St. Mary’s University. Currently he is a member of the Liberal Arts Council at The University of Texas at Austin.
Joe B. Egan
Joe Egan is the Vice President of Macro and is responsible for overseeing all accounting operations. His team is responsible for client financial reporting, as well as credit card and banking relations, payroll, accounts payable, inventory, and sales. He and his staff serve as clients’ liaison to employee benefit providers, client vendors, and payroll government reporting entities.
Joe has a combined 45 years of experience in the restaurant and food-service industry, over 30 of those years with Macro Management Services, Inc.
Prior to joining Macro, Joe supervised the tax accounting department with a mortgage banking company, was partner and general manager of a steakhouse in East Texas, and worked as a manager for Luby’s Cafeterias. He holds a B.B.A. in accounting from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
James Arthur is Macro’s computer and information specialist. His primary areas of responsibility include installation and management of operating hardware and software, troubleshooting systems, training clients’ staffs on POS equipment; and operational tasks, including equipment maintenance, software development, administration of technical updates, data backup and report development. A skilled programmer, James has developed software for client restaurant operations and can customize existing software packages to clients’ specifications.
Due to his thorough understanding of databases and operating systems, including Oracle, MySQL/MariaDB, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Windows, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Centos, Ubuntu, Solaris, and Free BSD; James is able to minimize clients’ need for costly technical support from POS manufacturers. He maintains professional relationships with sales and service people in the hospitality technology industry and is clients’ “go to” person for questions related to computers, telephone systems, security monitoring and data transmission.
Prior to joining Macro in 1998, James worked in Management Information Systems (MIS) positions for employers including a professional printing company, a research firm, Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and a window covering manufacturer.
Anthony Zales joined Macro as an accountant in 2013. He prepares the accounting work for clients, oversees costing analysis, coordinates Department of Labor and Texas Workforce Commission claims, and plays a lead role in the preparation of financial statements and budgets. Anthony was promoted to Director of Client Relations in 2016, serving as liaison for full service clients in operational and management oversight.
When he joined Macro, Anthony brought more than 20 years of experience in the restaurant and hotel industries, with responsibilities in both front and back of house management – from sous chef to general manager. He served for two years as a consultant, auditing clients’ financials and organizational structures to improve sales and profits. He also has worked with individuals in debt reduction and investment opportunities.
Anthony holds both a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and finance from University of Texas San Antonio and a degree in criminal justice from the State University of New York.
Brooke Benson grew up in the restaurant business and aside from a nine-year tenure in consumer lending, has worked in hospitality public relations and marketing for restaurants, catering operations, and a hotel. Her areas of concentration are business development, communication and messaging, concept adherence, business planning, and process analysis.
Brooke has served on Convention & Visitors Bureau committees, a Riverwalk Improvement taskforce, and the Paseo del Rio Association board. She has judged the Best of Downtown Awards in San Antonio and is an occasional contributor and guest author for several publications. She graduated from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, and The University of Texas at Austin.
Jennifer Sawyer brings nearly 20 years of experience in payroll and human resources to her current position overseeing payroll, staffing, and compensation programming for clients that contract for this type of support. Her team coordinates Affordable Care Act reporting for covered employees and prepares/files end-of-year payroll documents. Prior to joining Macro in 2007, Jennifer worked in HR in the aviation industry.
